Todays small business blog feature is Kristen Hartley owner of Foxx Salon + Spa. Our friendship began when I volunteered to shoot the Princess Party they hosted at the salon in 2019 and since then we have done many many photo sessions and collaborations ! Kristen is hard working, dedicated boss babe who is always eager to learn new skills and expand on her talents. Foxx Salon has become a home away from home for so many of their clients, all the girls who work there truly have such wonderful and welcoming personalities .
Q: Tell us about all about you?
A: Hi! My name is Kristen Hartley and I own Foxx Salon and Spa. I am a licensed hairdresser, certified esthetician, certified nail technician, certified lash technician, and a certified microblading technician... I think that’s it! 😂
I went to school in Sarnia, Toronto and London as well as many small online courses. I have also been in competitions and won awards for my nail art!
Aside from my business, I’m also a married mom of 3! I met my hubby in highschool and we’ve been together for 12+ years! I have a 6 year old boy Cole, a 4 year old girl Quinn, an almost 2 year old boy Kade and two dogs Ellie and Zoey.
My life is pretty busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!!
Q: What is your business all about? When did you start and where are you now ?
A: I have wanted to be a hairdresser for as long as I can remember. Except I actually went to school for esthetics first! I didn’t think that’s what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to own my own salon one day and I wanted to know every aspect of the beauty industry. Now, it’s a huge part of the services I offer to my clients, so I’m super happy I started that way.
I started out working for a couple other small business in town. I basically lived at work, and then I started my family. After that, I knew that I had to make my home life and work balance more, so I decided to open my own shop so I could dictate my own hours.
My business is all about giving my clients the best possible service and exceeding their expectations. I have some pretty special people working with me that are amazing at what they do. It is the best feeling when clients are super happy with their service!
Q: What services or products do you offer ?
A: We offer nail extensions, nail art, gel polish manicures, gel polish pedicures, paraffin pedicures, princess manicures and pedicures, maintenance pedicures, waxing, lash extensions, lash lifts and tints, microblading, hair cuts, hair colours, colour corrections, hair extensions, and facials.

Q: What’s your favourite part of your job?
A: My favourite part honestly changes with the day and my mood! Some days I want to paint little characters on nails, sometimes I want to take you from dark hair to platinum blonde. Sometimes I just love seeing what my lovely staff can create!
Q: How has the pandemics and lockdowns effected you and your business?
A: Positively, the lockdown has made me slow down and given me some much needed family time. But unfortunately the pandemic has effected our small business a lot. We had to close for a lot of the year with no support from our landlord. We have lost some amazing clients because they were laid off or lost their jobs.
It hurts my heart to know that we can’t be there for our clients. We are an outlet for a lot of people, and we are a big part of making them feel better.
I am eternally grateful for the clients that we get to keep, even through these hard times! You are truly what keeps us going!
Q: If you could describe your “perfect” day at work, what would it look like ?
A: Again, it totally depends on the day and what I really want to do! But at the end of the day, when my clients are super pumped about their amazing nail art or their fabulous new hairstyle that they didn’t think was possible, that’s a pretty perfect day!
Q: What’s your top 3 goals for your business?
A: My goals are to be able to stay open through these wild times, and be able to continually service my amazing clients. I’d also like to find a couple more talented professionals to add to our growing team!
